The St. Paul Police K-9 Foundation is asking for community support to help build a new 20-kennel site and training facility designed around the needs of working police dogs and their handlers.

K-9s require continued training, specialized equipment, veterinary care, and an environment that supports their health and readiness throughout their years of service. This project is more than a kennel – it’s an investment in the infrastructure behind successful K-9 teams.

The current kennel and training facility has supported the St. Paul K9 Unit for XX years but lacks key features beneficial to dogs and handlers. The new facility will provide an improved environment for the care and training of St. Paul's K-9s while strengthening the Unit's ability to prepare teams for the demanding situations they encounter in the field.

  • Roof expansion to improve building coverage, durability, and year-round usability.
  • Indoor expansion to increase training, staging, and operational space.
  • Remodel of 20 kennels to improve safety, sanitation, animal comfort, and workflow.
  • New mechanical systems to support ventilation, heating, cooling, and building performance.
  • New electrical systems to support modern facility demands and future growth.
  • Epoxy flooring for durability, easier cleaning, and improved sanitation.
  • Floor drains to support efficient washdown and kennel maintenance.
  • New ceilings to improve building finish, function, and long-term performance.
  • Garage doors to improve access, training logistics, equipment movement, and operations.

The modern facility will help support the dogs' health and well-being, provide an environment for ongoing training, and give handlers and trainers the resources they need to prepare K-9 teams to serve safely and effectively.

Police K-9s bring specialized abilities that make them an invaluable part of public safety.

Alongside their handlers, St. Paul Police K-9s help locate missing people and suspects, search for evidence, detect dangerous substances, support public safety operations, and respond to situations throughout our community. They also help build connections with residents through demonstrations, school visits, and community events.

Preparing a K-9 team for this work requires significant commitment. The St. Paul Police Department's dogs are specifically bred for their unique drive, health, and characteristics. Both dogs and handlers undergo extensive training to develop the skills and partnership they will rely on throughout the K-9's career.

An Investment with Regional Impact

St. Paul provides Basic K-9 School training to law enforcement agencies throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. Between 2019 and 2026 alone, teams from more than 30 outside law enforcement agencies attended the program — including police departments and sheriff's offices from communities across Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as organizations such as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
